MINNEAPOLIS – Mark your calendars! Saturday, May 17th, is the third Annual Seedling Giveaway at the Four Sisters Urban Farm. The event is co-sponsored by the East Phillips Improvement Coalition (EPIC) and the Four Sisters Urban Farm, a project of the Native American Community Development Institute (NACDI). Community members are invited to the celebrate the changing of the seasons and pick up some plants for their budding gardens.
While increasing accessibility to growing and connecting to the land is an inspiration for the giveaway, the roots of the event are more focused on togetherness.
“Gardening is a great way to bring people together, it’s so cooperative and people are so happy to learn from each other,” said Gloria Iacono, Four Sisters Urban Farm manager. “Giving is a way to celebrate the abundance of spring and helps us start the season in a good way knowing that energy will echo back to us and help build community”
A majority of the seedlings were started at Dream of Wild Health, a partner of the event. Attendees will also be treated to food and conversations with local community organizations, as well as have the opportunity to vote in the EPIC board elections.
“We’re thrilled to co-host the third annual Seedling Giveaway!” said Luke Gannon, Program Engagement at EPIC. “This event strengthens connections between neighbors, provides free plants that nourish our community all summer long, and offers a great opportunity to step into civic leadership by getting involved with EPIC. We hope to see you there!”
The event takes place on the 2800 block of 17th Avenue in Minneapolis, located on the corner of the Four Sisters Urban Farm (2839 17th Ave S, Minneapolis, MN 55407). Activities will start at 11 am with an opening from an elder, and seedlings will be handed out from 12 pm – 3 pm until they are all gone. All are welcome.
